Mul-T-Lock’s smart lock ecosystem breaks into three lines, and each demands different prep work at the door.

The ENTR series is the motorized cylinder retrofit. It replaces the thumbturn on the interior side of an existing Mul-T-Lock high-security cylinder. If your door already has a Mul-T-Lock MT5+ or Interactive+ deadbolt, the ENTR cylinder slides onto the existing cam without touching the exterior hardware. That’s the compatibility gotcha: the ENTR will not mount to a standard Schlage or Kwikset cylinder. The tailpiece geometry is proprietary. We’ve arrived at jobs in Arcadia where a customer bought an ENTR online and discovered it wouldn’t interface with their existing deadbolt.

The Code-It is a standalone electronic handle set, battery-powered, no wiring. It fits standard 2-1/8″ bore holes but requires a specific backset measurement, either 2-3/8″ or 2-3/4″. Phoenix tract homes built 1995-2010 often have the shorter backset; measuring wrong means the latch won’t reach the strike.

The Classic Pro with Bluetooth module is the integrated deadbolt replacement. It needs a door thickness between 1-3/8″ and 2″, which covers most residential entry doors but excludes some vintage Spanish Colonial doors in the Willo and Encanto districts.

Signs Your Mul-T-Lock Smart Lock Installation Is Failing

• The app shows “connected” but the lock won’t respond. This usually points to a failing Bluetooth module in the Classic Pro or a depleted but not yet dead battery pack in the ENTR. The lock’s mechanical core still functions, which tells us the motor driver board is the problem, not the cylinder.
• The motorized bolt extends halfway, then retracts. The internal clutch is slipping, often from dust infiltration during Phoenix’s dust storm season. The ENTR’s clutch assembly is replaceable, but most owners don’t have the pin tools to disassemble it without damaging the housing.
• Keypad buttons require multiple presses or don’t register. On the Code-It, this indicates membrane switch degradation. Heat accelerates this in Arizona; we’ve replaced Code-It keypads in Sun Lakes that failed at four years, well under the rated lifespan, because direct afternoon sun baked the electronics through the door.
• The lock beeps error codes that aren’t in the manual. These are typically motor timeout errors, meaning the bolt is encountering resistance it can’t overcome. The cause is usually a misaligned strike plate after seasonal settling, not a defective lock, but the motor strains until it burns out if ignored.
• Battery life drops from twelve months to six weeks. This indicates the motor is working harder than designed, either from a binding bolt or failing internal gears. Replacing the battery repeatedly masks the real problem until the motor fails entirely.

DIY or Call Us?

There’s a short list of checks an owner can make safely. Replace the battery with fresh alkalines, not rechargeables, which voltage-drop differently and confuse the low-battery sensor. Verify the strike plate hasn’t shifted by marking the bolt path with lipstick or chalk and closing the door. Check that the door hangs true in the frame; if you can see daylight between door and jamb at the latch height, seasonal swelling or settling is binding the bolt.

Where DIY goes wrong: the ENTR and Classic Pro contain high-torque motors with no mechanical slip clutch accessible to the user. Forcing a stuck bolt by hand while the motor is engaged strips internal nylon gears. The Code-It’s membrane keypad is not field-replaceable; opening the housing voids the IP rating and usually breaks the weather seal. Phoenix’s hard water and dust infiltration mean a lock that worked in a California install may fail faster here.
