Which Medeco Models This Applies To

Medeco’s product lines split into three eras of cylinder design, and the rekeying approach differs for each.

Medeco Original (Biaxial) - The classic pin-tumbler with angled cuts and sidebar. Found on doors installed 1980-2010. Keyway stamped “M3” or “Biaxial.” Rekeying requires factory pinning kits with chisel-point bottom pins; standard .005-inch increments won’t seat correctly.

Medeco M3 - Added a slider mechanism to the Biaxial core. Keyway has a small notch near the bow. These cylinders demand M3-specific sidebar springs and sliders; mixing Biaxial components causes immediate key malfunction.

Medeco X4 / KeyMark - The commercial-grade interchangeable core line, often in Best-format housings. Rekeying here means repinning the core itself, not replacing the entire cylinder. KeyMark cores are stamped “KM” on the face.

We carry OEM Medeco pinning kits and sidebar components. Aftermarket equivalents exist for Biaxial pins at roughly half the cost, but we’ve found the tolerances drift in Arizona’s dry heat; the alloy hardens slightly and the shear line gets sloppy. For M3 and X4, we use factory components exclusively. The model number is etched on the cylinder face or visible on the key bow.

Signs Your Medeco Lock Rekeying Is Failing

• Key turns but doesn’t retract the bolt. The tailpiece or cam has separated from the cylinder housing, often from over-torquing by a duplicate key cut on an inaccurate machine. The rekey itself is fine; the linkage needs inspection.
• Key sticks at the 10 o’clock position. A sidebar spring has fatigued. In Phoenix, we see this after 8-12 years of thermal cycling; the spring steel loses temper faster here than in coastal climates.
• New key works, old key still works too. The pinning was done with standard-depth pins instead of Medeco’s chisel-point geometry. A proper rekey eliminates every previous key combination.
• Keyway feels gritty, key catches on insertion. Dust intrusion combined with dried lubricant. Desert dust is finer than Midwest grit and works into the sidebar channel. Cleaning and repinning solves it.
• Landlord rekeyed; tenant’s key still operates lock. Master pinning was left in place from a previous system. A full rekey to a single-user bitting removes all master levels.

DIY or Call Us?

What you can safely check: the cylinder face for the model stamp, whether you have at least one working key, and whether the keyway obstruction is visible dust or a broken key fragment.

Where DIY goes wrong: Medeco cylinders use sidebar mechanisms that spring-load outward against the housing. Disassembling without a follower tool collapses the sidebar into the pin chambers; the springs scatter, and the cylinder becomes a paperweight. The pinning depths are not standard .003 or .005 increments; a standard pinning kit will not produce a working key. And the key itself must be cut on a Medeco-specific duplicator with angled jaw alignment; a standard key machine copies the outline but not the lift geometry.
