Medeco Deadbolt Installation: The Phoenix Owner’s Guide

Medeco deadbolt installation in Phoenix typically runs $340-$580 for a complete single-cylinder replacement, including the cylinder, bolt assembly, strike plate, and labor. We stock Medeco Maxum 11*503 and 11*543 series hardware on our trucks, and most residential replacements are completed in under 90 minutes. Same-day scheduling is available when you call before 2 PM.

Most Phoenix homeowners discover their Medeco deadbolt is failing when the key begins to catch at 10 o’clock during rotation, or when the bolt no longer throws fully into the strike plate during summer months. The brass components in Medeco’s original factory cylinders are sensitive to the hard water mineral buildup that blows through on dust storms, and the dry heat accelerates wear on the sidebar springs that make Medeco pick-resistant.

Which Medeco Models This Applies To

Medeco deadbolts fall into three series you’ll find on Phoenix doors. The Maxum residential line carries an 11* prefix: 11*503 for single-cylinder, 11*543 for double-cylinder with interior thumbturn. The older 11*2 series from the 1990s and early 2000s is still common in Arcadia and Encanto historic districts. Commercial grade 1 hardware uses the 20*760 rim cylinder or the 10*523 mortise body. Check the face of the cylinder for a small stamped code, or remove the interior thumbturn to find a paper label with the series number.

We install OEM Medeco cylinders and the Assa Abloy factory-specified replacement bolts. Aftermarket cylinders marketed as “Medeco-compatible” exist, but they rarely carry the UL 437 listing or the angled key-pin sidebar geometry that defines Medeco’s pick resistance. In Phoenix, we see a compatibility gotcha with doors prepped for standard 2-3/8″ backsets: some Medeco Maxum units require a 2-3/4″ backset for full bolt throw, and the difference isn’t visible until the old hardware is out. We measure before we quote. Novak Lock & Security Phoenix is an independent service provider, not affiliated with Medeco.

Signs Your Medeco Deadbolt Installation Is Failing

Signs Your Medeco Deadbolt Installation Is Failing
  • Key sticks at the 10 o’clock position during rotation. This indicates sidebar spring fatigue. The Medeco sidebar uses three angled pins that must align simultaneously; when the springs weaken, the sidebar drags against the cylinder housing. In Phoenix, we replace this assembly rather than lubricate past the failure.
  • Bolt throws only partially in summer, then frees in winter. Wood-frame doors in Ahwatukee and Desert Ridge swell during monsoon humidity and contract in dry January air. The bolt isn’t failing; the door is shifting. We check frame alignment and often relocate the strike plate rather than replace the lock.
  • Key requires jiggling to withdraw. The cam at the rear of the cylinder has worn or the tailpiece connection to the bolt mechanism has loosened. This worsens until the key traps in the lock. We see this most in Medeco cylinders with more than 15 years of daily use.
  • Interior thumbturn spins without moving the bolt. The tailpiece has sheared or the bolt mechanism’s internal linkage has failed. On double-cylinder units, both sides may still operate with the key while the thumbturn is disconnected. This is a full mechanism replacement, not a cylinder rekey.
  • Visible corrosion on the cylinder face or bolt. Phoenix’s alkaline dust and occasional hard rain leave white mineral deposits on brass. Medeco’s original finish holds up better than most, but once corrosion reaches the keyway, the sidebar pins bind. We replace before the key breaks off inside.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

Medeco deadbolt installation pricing in Phoenix:

  • Single-cylinder Maxum replacement: $340-$460
  • Double-cylinder Maxum replacement: $420-$580
  • Backset modification (2-3/8″ to 2-3/4″): add $45-$75
  • Strike plate relocation or reinforcement: $35-$65
  • Rekey to existing Medeco key system: $25 per cylinder

The range reflects door thickness (1-3/4″ standard vs. 2-1/4″ solid core), existing prep condition, and whether the current installation used proper Medeco-specified mounting hardware or generic screws that stripped the jamb. Every quote is written before we start. Haven Standard Clause 1: the price on the phone is the price on the invoice. The 365-Day Done Right Promise covers parts and labor. You receive a documented photo record at completion.

An owner can safely check three things: confirm the backset measurement (2-3/8″ or 2-3/4″), verify the door edge bore is 1″ diameter for the faceplate, and test whether the bolt binds with the door open (eliminating frame alignment as the cause). Do not attempt to disassemble the Medeco cylinder itself. The sidebar springs are under compression and the angled key pins require factory gauging to reinstall correctly. We have replaced cylinders that owners opened with screwdriver and pliers, then could not reassemble. The name on the van is the same name on the invoice. That’s the whole argument.
