Which Kwikset Models This Applies To

Kwikset’s master key architecture works through the SmartKey and traditional pin-tumbler lines differently, and mixing the two under one hierarchy is where most Phoenix properties run into trouble. The traditional system uses the 660, 780, and 980 series deadbolts and lever sets with standard Kwikset keyways (KW1 or KW10). SmartKey cylinders - the ones with the small slot beside the keyway - use a sidebar and wafer system that does not accept standard master pinning; you cannot build a true master key system on SmartKey hardware without replacing the cylinders entirely.

To identify what you have: remove a cylinder and look for the stamped model number on the face. A “660” or “980” prefix means traditional pinning. “SmartKey” or a slot beside the keyway means sidebar. Measure the cylinder diameter - Kwikset standard is 1-3/8″ housing depth, but commercial-grade 780/980 series run 1-1/2″ and require longer tailpieces. We carry both.

For OEM versus aftermarket: Kwikset factory master pins are brass with a consistent .023″ increment, which matters for clean shear-line alignment. Aftermarket pinning kits from LAB or HPC use the same tolerances and cost less, but in Phoenix’s hard water and dust environment we’ve found brass OEM pins corrode slower. Signs Your Kwikset Master Key System Is Failing

• Sub-master opens change-key doors. The pin stack has worn below the master pin’s shear line, or a master pin was installed upside-down. Either way, the hierarchy is compromised and the system needs repinning.
• Key works in one cylinder but not another in the same suite. Cylinders were keyed to different specifications, or one has been rekeyed outside the hierarchy. We see this in Phoenix rental properties where a handyman swapped a cylinder without checking the bitting list.
• Key requires jiggling or repeated attempts. Worn pins create false gates; in desert conditions, fine dust accelerates brass wear. The cylinder isn’t broken yet, but the tolerance stack is drifting.
• Master key works, but change keys don’t. A top pin has sheared or a spring has collapsed. Kwikset springs are standard .030″ wire, but aftermarket replacements vary - wrong spring pressure changes the feel and eventually the function.
• New keys cut from code won’t insert. The keyway has been reamed by a worn key, or the cylinder was swapped for a different keyway profile. We measure keyway width with a plug gauge to confirm before cutting anything.

You can safely check three things: confirm the model number stamped on your cylinder face, count how many keyed cylinders are in your property, and test whether the problem is consistent across all doors or isolated to one. Write down what you find - that information lets us quote accurately when you call.

What you should not attempt: disassembling a pinned cylinder without a plug follower. The top pins and springs are under pressure and will launch into the room or into your eye. Rekeying a master key system requires a pinning chart, depth and spacing keys, and the ability to read a bitting list - one wrong pin placement compromises the entire hierarchy.
