DIY or Call Us?
What you can safely check yourself: verify that the batteries are fresh and correctly oriented, confirm the Kwikset app is updated, and inspect the strike plate for visible bolt drag marks. If the bolt drags, a few turns on the strike plate screws may help.
Where DIY goes wrong: Kwikset smart locks contain a motorized deadbolt with enough torque to pinch fingers or damage the door if the bolt binds during installation. More critically, the ribbon cable between exterior and interior halves is fragile and easily kinked during reassembly. Once damaged, it requires full lock replacement. The door prep also matters. A 1-3/4″ residential door needs a different collar stack than a 2-1/4″ commercial door, and using the wrong combination will leave the exterior loose enough to leak water and dust.
