• Schlage Connect (BE469) - Z-Wave or Zigbee, hub-dependent. The Connect Z-Wave Plus (model BE469ZP) is the current revision; older BE469 units without the “ZP” suffix have known firmware issues with Samsung SmartThings hubs that can mimic hardware failure.

We also see this when the door frame has shifted and the bolt is binding; the motor works harder, the batteries drain faster.
• App shows “connected” but commands fail silently. For Encode, this usually means the WiFi signal at the door is marginal - the lock joins the network but drops packets under load. For Connect Z-Wave models, it’s often a mesh network issue where the lock is trying to route through a failed repeater. We test signal strength at the door before we leave.
• Physical key becomes difficult to turn. The mechanical override cylinder is independent of the electronics, but shares the same latch assembly. A key that binds indicates the cam is misaligned or the latch is sticking - both conditions that will eventually overload the smart lock’s motor if not corrected.

Here’s where each path breaks down.

What you can safely check yourself: Verify your door’s backset measurement (2-3/8″ or 2-3/4″), confirm your WiFi reaches the door with a speed test, and replace the batteries with fresh alkalines - not lithiums, which voltage-spike the Schlage battery monitor. Check that the strike plate isn’t visibly shifted from the bolt path.

Where DIY goes wrong: The Schlage installation template assumes a standard bore; if your door has a drive-in latch or an older Weiser or Kwikset installation with a smaller face bore, the Encode escutcheon may not seat flush. We’ve pulled DIY installs where the owner forced the screws, cracked the interior housing, and stripped the mounting posts - the lock worked for two weeks, then the electronics failed from housing flex.
