What goes wrong in DIY deadbolt installation: misalignment of the tailpiece with the bolt mechanism, which causes immediate failure or lockout; over-tightening the exterior escutcheon, which warps the mechanism housing; and failure to install the 3-inch security screws in the strike plate, leaving the door vulnerable to kick-in.
